FHE Weekly: Chapter 4 Freedom to Choose
FHE Planning Sheet
New Era Poster: Little by Little
“New Era Poster,” New Era, Aug 2001, 19
Scripture, Thought or Poem: (Quote) “Latter-day Saints not only believe that freedom to make one’s own choices is an inalienable divine right, but they know that the exercise of it is essential to man’s growth and development. Deprived of it, men would be but puppets in the hands of fate.” (Look to God and Live. pp192-193)
Or
Tell the Story of Captain Moroni and his Flag Flannel Board Story: Captain Moroni, Friend, Aug 1992
Lesson: Chapter 3 Jesus Christ, Our Chosen Leader and Savior
“Chapter 4: Freedom to Choose,” Gospel Principles, (2009)
Story: A Song in his Heart
Hazel M. Thomson, “A Song in His Heart,” Friend, Aug 1982, 34
Activity: (Craft) Paper Marionette
“Paper Marionette,” Friend, Nov. 1989, 33
I would use a heavy laminate for this project. For the cardstock you can also use cereal boxes. After the family has had a chance to play with the marionette, and discussed what it means to not be able to choose for themselves, you can have someone open a pre-wrapped pair of scissors as a symbol of the gift of freedom and discuss the atonement and how it keeps us free.
To make time go by faster, you can pre-make these and then have the children color them after FHE, or enlarge this and use it as an attention getter in the beginning of the lesson.
Refreshments: Liberty Cupcake Recipe Click Here (Add a quote that says “We are free to choose liberty and eternal life.”) For this, I would suggest fruit-roll-up as a substitute for the fire, or Firecracker treat instructions Click Here (Add a quote that says “Celebrate your freedom, choose well.”) or a pack/piece of gum and add a quote that says, “We are free to chews.” Pixie Stick Flag: Make Family Flags out of paper and glue them to a pixie stick candy. Then tell the story of Captain Moroni and his flag.
