Graduation: Who’s Party Is It?
So I was talking to my dear friend the other day and her eldest is graduating from high school and she was inviting all of his friends and family to a dinner party for him. Her husband asked her why she wasn’t inviting her friends and she promptly replied because it isn’t my party…but really? I think it is. Just take a look at her report card:
Meal Preparation A+ – Dinner was always ready at 6:30, I know because that is the time I couldn’t call. And when she was sick she had meals in her freezer, that her children could just pop into the oven. And for lunches she made all 5 of them every school night long after her children have gone to bed.
Sports A+ – Laundry for 5 is hard for any mother, but some of us (myself) would tend to let his football uniform go for a couple of days of practice instead of doing another load of laundry at 10:00 pm, after he finally got home from practice, not her. She would do laundry way into the night to have his uniform ready for the next day, and even got props for how white they were. In fact every time I call her she is doing laundry…..hmmm always so inspired. Her son took 3rd place discus at state last week.
Scouting A+ – Her eldest son has just received his eagle but she didn’t stop there, she thought she would knock them all out at once, her next son just completed his eagle project last week, and her third son will finish his by the end of the summer. They will be having a Court of Honor that wont be soon forgotten.
Seminary A+ – Ok what mother in their right mind finally gets to the point where their children are old enough to make their own breakfasts and really likes Early Morning Seminary? Her son graduates with honors this week.
Education A+ – Wonderful is the mother who can stay up late with their child doing a last minute project with them, giving them instruction, encouraging them, inspiring them but not doing it for them. Understanding that between scouts, YM, Seminary and Sports, he really didn’t have a chance to do it before. Because really by midnight, I’d rather just do it myself. But not her. Her son will graduate 6th in his class.
Honors:
And she gets to graduate with honors because she did all this and much, much more while she was going through 3 surgeries and 2 life threatening medical procedures in an effort to cure her painful illness.
So I say it IS her party too. Today I celebrate her and this accomplishment. As her son receives his diploma, I celebrate the woman who made it happen, behind every graduate is a wonderful mother. Today I celebrate them. Matt and Vicki congradulations!
Today my 3 month old rolled over. We are so proud… and it begins.
