Confession: We Might be Average

She could read before kindergarten, he had off the charts spacial recognition skills when he was five, she was the  1st first-grader to be skilled enough for the elementary jump rope team, and they both were national dance champions at the ages of 8 and 7 respectively. Now my two children are 12 and 13, and while I think they are great, they might be average. They are not super stars or geniuses or scholarship holders, they don’t go to private school or make exceptional grades and they do not, much to my dismay, have a two page spread about them in the Friend or New Era Magazine. My name is Bianca and after all my perfect planning and practically perfect parenting, and after pushing my children as far as I thought they could go….my children might be average. I say “might” because I don’t know for sure. To me, they continue to be exceptional even if there are no more trophies, awards or ribbons. To me they are geniuses every time they choose the right. And to me they are brilliant every time they make a choice that makes them happy. Still, with my toddler, I might not push him as hard in the direction of glory and glitz. I might not expect him to win every championship and spelling bee, or excel at what the world might think is great. If I can only teach him to make choices that lead to his own eternal happiness. I will have excelled as a parent.
