Confession: I Eat Less Meat…

Emily's Wonderful Meatless Recipes

My Mother and Father in-law always place the meat in front of our plates these days, when we go over there for dinner, and for our birthday dinners they make sure there is something meaty for the main course. They are worried that their son and grandchildren aren’t getting enough iron and protein. Yes, it does sting a little that they aren’t grateful that I cook for them at all. I’m not going to lie. But in their defense, they are sweet about adding wonderful veggies and grains and other sides without which, we would surely starve. The reason for their concern, is that we have decided to “eat meat sparingly”. Oh the horror! My name is Bianca and my family and I eat meat sparingly. So far we do not have any protein deficiency symptoms, but we have received many blessings since we began, over a year ago. We have not been sick as much, and we have been inspired a lot more. The fact is, I’ve learned to use my food storage and we have enjoyed better health then we ever have. I’m not recommending this to anyone or anything on account that we all know what happens to people who do…just ask Oprah. I’m just saying is all. But if you want to try eating less meat on the down-low, There is a great book put out by the Church in 1978 and it has some very fun recipes. Recipes Click Here or visit OneLovelyLife.com. This LDS Sister has a “Meatless Monday” section that is filled with yummy recipes.  And if you are worried about a lack of protein, read the Word of Wisdom, and have a little faith. I’ll let you know when I start looking malnourished….it might be a while though, I still have a little baby fat to go. It’s only been a year. Even still, would that be so bad? Some of my favorite models look a little malnourished. I’ll take my chances.

  • My in-laws do and feel the same exact way! The problem is that my husband and kids still love to eat meat, so although I don’t cook with meat often at home, they scarf a lot of it down every Sunday.

  • Hi Val,
So sorry to hear that. As I’ve come to realize with my own in-laws, I’m sure their actions are out of love and concern for you and your family. I am confident that giving your children the freedom to choose what they want to eat when you can’t be the one to cook for them, and cooking what you feel is good for them in your own home will lead them to make excellent, nutritious choices when it comes time for them to do their own cooking. I am so proud of you for taking your little ones to their grandparents every week and allowing them to feel their love. It takes a strong woman to do that, when you may feel that they don’t appreciate your wisdom and intuition with regards to your children. Thank you so much for your comment and for your patience with others as you strive to gain even greater understanding of the Word of Wisdom, and what it means for you and your family. I pray that the blessings you are promised by keeping it will fill your life.
    Hugs,

P.S. My daughter used to be our biggest meat eaters in the family. Now she is our family cheer leader, and the most adamant that we continue to lessen the meat intake in our home.
She has also gone forward to study nutrition more in depth, and through research, observation of how she feels when she eats certain things, prayer, and meditation continues to decide what is best for her, and her body.
