Gospel Academic Standards
I loved all the talks about being a teacher to our children this last general conference and began thinking about what I want my children to know about the gospel. When I first began teaching them I was all over the board, from following the prophet to temples to scripture stories but when it came to be test time, whether it was playing a church game with Grandma or just questions in primary, or whatever, my children didn’t seem to really know the basics so I made up a list of our Family’s Gospel Academic Standards and Here they are:
1. To know the Articles of Faith and be able to discuss them logically with others when their beliefs are questioned.
2. To know the location of all the different books in the scriptures. I mean they should know that Nephi is in the Book of Mormon and Job is in the Old Testament. And be able to look up a scripture quickly when asked.
3. To make comments in church that are short, to the point and that make sense. To give organized, well written talks, to bear a well thought out testimony and to be able to say a good prayer at the drop of a hat.
4. To know how to play 3 church songs on a musical instrument of choice, preferably the piano.
5. To know how to lead music.
6. To know how to find a scripture for a specific topic in a timely manner.
7. To know how to relate gospel topics to their own life.
8. To know how to plan and teach a Family Home Evening Lesson
9. To efficiently, mark their scriptures so that they can refer to them easily, and be able to use at any age.
10. To know how to journal and keep a record of their life that will be an inspiration and instruction for generations to come.
