The Miracle of the Word of Wisdom

History Curriculum
So there I was shopping in St. George at a kitchenware store, when my son’s cell phone went off. It was his friend wondering if he was going to be homeschooling again this year. I said we were and when I walked around a corner I was greeted by a very pleasant looking woman. “So you are the homeschool mom?”, she began. We talked for a few minutes and she offered me her card. I was expecting it to be a homeschool group but it turned out that I was talking to the Author of Timelines Etc. a history curriculum for LDS Homeschoolers. I immediately got excited when I saw timeline because that is how I have been wanting to teach my children so they could better compare the spiritual and secular events in history and the values we learn and how the two are directly related. President Eyring stressed the importance of a good history curriculum in the April,  New Era when he quotes D&C 88:76-80.
  • …”78 Teach ye diligently and my agrace shall attend you, that you may be binstructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;
  •   79 Of things both in aheaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must bshortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the cnations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a dknowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—
  •   80 That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to amagnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the bmission with which I have commissioned you.”
She showed me a sample of  of her work. Each section has a poem with actions to help you memorize the chronological order of the events from the beginning of time, pictures to go with them and values we learn from history. She also has a curriculum for the scriptures so you can compare them directly.
As it turns out, she has been working on this program for 14 years. For me, it was a dream come true. All that work, and I didn’t have to do it. It was a chance meeting, I live two hours and she lives 5 hours away f rom the place we met. I was killing time while my husband was on a business call and hadn’t even planned on going into that store for anything. The biggest miracle of all was that I had in my head what I wanted, what I needed, for the education of my children and Heavenly Father gave handed it to me. This program isn’t just for homeschoolers. It is also a great way for any family to teach the scriptures or supplement their children’s history education in a short 10-15 min lessons. Let me recommend the Family Devotional Guide if nothing else.
I just got my order yesterday and I couldn’t be more excited.
